Management & Leadership

Proactive Supervisory Management - 3 Days

Often, employees are promoted to supervision because of their strong technical expertise – expertise in building a product or providing a service. Suddenly, the new supervisor is now charged with a whole new range of responsibilities, many of which have little to do with technical expertise.

This five module programme takes the delegate through a series of analyses, activities and experiences to help them master the people side of the Supervisory role. By examining, discussing, testing out and appraising key skills and situations over the three days, participants on this course will discover a greater insight into what it means to be a supervisor, how to manage and develop their team and how to manage upwards.

Mastering Management Skills – 5 Days

A manager’s job is complex and multidimensional. Many new managers know that they'll have to master a new set of skills, if they want to be successful. However, despite being prepared for the challenges ahead, they can come unstuck in unexpected ways.

This course is designed to assist the new manager with a set of skills and concepts that will support his / her endeavours to become an effective and confident manager. In addition it will also provide managers with a sound understanding of what an organisation is and to look beyond their own role in comprehending their impact on the success of an organisation. The course will offer practical skills and tools as well as concepts and ideas to assist with managing relationships; setting a vision and goals, being productive and accountable, and increasing confidence in yourself and your decisions.

Senior Management Skills – 3 Days

Most organisations have only a few great managers. This is a sad state of affairs since many more managers are smart, capable, and could be much better. Good managers fail to work hard enough to improve themselves. They reach a good level of proficiency and stop there, according to Harvard Business School professors Hill and Lineback.

For decades, organisations and their leaders were comfortable with strategies and practices that kept them in the middle of the road – that’s where the customers were, that’s what felt safe and secure. In the new world of business, with so much change, the true mark of a leader is the willingness to stick with a bold course of action. As Tom Peters says: “one of the great tests of leadership maturity, … is the ability to deal with “the intangibles.” To get over the pretense that, “only the numbers matter.” All the great sports coaches I know agree: Attitude and Heart Rule!”

The Senior Management programme will challenge you to become the great manager you are capable of and that your organisation needs. Through a series of seminars and group work you will meet other like-minded managers and examine the key issues affecting your organisation today. You will plot an individual course of action for your own growth. Post course executive coaching will also be offered.

Executive Coaching: To suit Business Needs

Specialised one-to-one or small group coaching to ensure your top managers are developing their particular skills and being provided the customised support they need to excel at their jobs.

Whereas coaching was once viewed by many as a tool to help correct underperformance, today it is becoming much more widely used in supporting top producers. In fact, in a 2004 survey by Right Management Consultants (Philadelphia), 86 percent of companies said they used coaching to sharpen the skills of individuals who have been identified as future organisational leaders. The belief is that, under the right circumstances, one-on-one interaction with an objective third party can provide a focus that other forms of organisational support simply cannot.

Coaching has evolved into the mainstream fast. This is because there is a great demand in the workplace for immediate results, and coaching can help provide that. How? By providing, feedback and guidance in real time. Coaching develops leaders in the context of their current jobs, without removing them from their day-to-day responsibilities.

Our Executive Coaching is facilitated by Proactive Training’s Director – Consultancy & Training, Dr Cheryl Crosthwaite, who has a proven track record in this area of management development.

Strategic Planning - 2 days

According to a 2009 McKinsey study, 78% of businesses use their strategic plans to assess progress on a monthly or quarterly basis. Strategic planning is important for businesses because it matches business strengths with marketplace opportunities and provides direction to meet goals. Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organisation is going over the next year or more, how it's going to get there and how it'll know if it got there or not.

A strategic plan is a road map for each critical area of business. These business areas are laid out in a cohesive system that enables an organisation to successfully plot a path and assess progress towards the goals. Strategic planning is imperative for Managers in all business areas, and this course assists Managers to acquire new skills and or sharpen their existing strategic planning skills.

Running Effective Meetings - 1 Day

Research has shown us that Managers spend up to 25 % of their week in meetings and according to Koontz, 90% say more than half that time is wasted. Meetings are notorious time wasters in the eyes of many people. There is often some truth in this. Meetings can eat into people’s time preventing them from being more productive. This in turn indirectly results in a financial cost. It also means that unless you can demonstrate great productivity in these meetings, both you and your team are losing out.

Properly run meetings are an essential means of communication between two or more people. They can save time, generate ideas, solve problems and increase motivation and productivity. It is therefore imperative, that we should be doing everything we can to ensure the success of the meetings we lead and or participate in. This course is designed to sharpen your skill-set in how to maximise meetings and ensure they are run efficiently and effectively.

Managing Change - 2 Days

The old saying that the only constant is change is never more applicable than in today’s business environment. A proactive approach to dealing with change is at the core of this course and Managers will leave the course with skills in all three aspects.
